Feyenoord vs Celtic Preview

Celtic make the trip to Rotterdam tonight for a huge European challenge in the 2025/26 season, facing a Feyenoord side that remains aggressive, front-foot and fiercely difficult to play against at De Kuip. It’s a night that will test Celtic’s bravery on the ball and their discipline without it.

The Opposition

Feyenoord at home are exactly what you expect:

intense pressing, rapid transitions, wide overloads, and midfield runners arriving in numbers. And although their squad has evolved, the quality is still there — especially in their key trio.

Their Key Players

  • Gijs Smal – a major threat from left-back. Constant overlapping runs, dangerous deliveries, and a huge part of Feyenoord’s build-up. Celtic cannot allow him space to step forward freely.

  • Sam Steijn – their chief creator. Finds pockets, links play beautifully, and makes clever late runs into the box. Everything Feyenoord do through the middle flows through him.

  • Ayase Ueda – sharp movement, good in tight areas, and clinical when given service. Celtic’s centre-backs must be switched on constantly.

Expect Feyenoord to press aggressively early, pin Celtic back wide, and try to force turnovers high up the pitch.

Celtic’s Approach

Celtic will need to show composure and courage from the first whistle.

Feyenoord are excellent at trapping teams in their own third if you hesitate in possession.

Key Priorities

  • Beat the press — crisp, quick passing with angles from midfield.

  • Protect the centre — Steijn thrives when he finds gaps; Celtic must stay compact.

  • Exploit transitions — with Smal pushing high, space will appear for Tounekti and Tierney to break into.

  • Kenny’s physicality — huge tonight; he must hold the ball and bring runners into play.

This is one of those European nights where Celtic have to play with conviction, not fear.

Players to Watch

For Celtic

  • Tierney – vital in driving Celtic up the pitch and breaking lines.

  • Tounekti – pace and directness that can hurt Feyenoord when they overcommit.

  • McGregor – needs to set the rhythm under heavy pressure.

  • Kenny – must provide an outlet and occupy Feyenoord’s centre-backs.

For Feyenoord

  • Gijs Smal – attacking full-back who creates overloads and constant danger.

  • Sam Steijn – their creative hub; Celtic must stop him dictating.

  • Ayase Ueda – mobile and clinical.

The Challenge Ahead

De Kuip will be hostile, loud and unforgiving.

Feyenoord will come flying out of the traps.

But if Celtic survive the early wave, stay compact, and use their pace in transition, there’s a pathway to a result.

A massive European night awaits.
