Kelechi Iheanacho: A Familiar Face, A Short-Term Fix

The Move — Free Agent Gamble
Celtic have completed the signing of Kelechi Iheanacho on a free transfer after his release from Sevilla. The Nigerian striker had been linked with a move to Parkhead back in January, but at the time he turned Celtic down. Now, months later, he arrives in Glasgow under very different circumstances.
It’s a deal that reflects the current state of the club’s transfer strategy: rather than making the ambitious moves needed to properly replace Kyogo in January or Adam Idah this summer, Celtic have instead moved for a player whose career has stalled badly since leaving Leicester City.
Profile: Iheanacho’s Career So Far
Early Promise: Broke through at Manchester City with a reputation as one of the most clinical young strikers in England.
Leicester Years: Produced flashes of quality — particularly in cup competitions — but never consistently nailed down the starting role. His best spell under Brendan Rodgers came during Leicester’s FA Cup run, where he scored freely and looked a real threat.
Recent Struggles: Since leaving Leicester in 2023, Iheanacho has failed to find form. His stint at Sevilla was forgettable, with little output in terms of goals or assists, leading to his release.
Strengths, Concerns, and Celtic’s Fit
Iheanacho’s biggest strength remains his instinctive finishing. When confident, he can be clinical inside the box and offers a different profile to Celtic’s current options. He’s also versatile enough to play as a second striker or off the shoulder, which could provide Rodgers with some flexibility.
The concerns, however, are obvious. His output over the past few years has been poor, his confidence looks fragile, and physically he may no longer be at the level required to lead the line every week. For many supporters, this feels like a stop-gap move rather than the ambitious signing the squad really needed.
Final Thoughts: Rodgers’ Last Throw of the Dice?
The last manager to truly get something out of Kelechi Iheanacho was Brendan Rodgers at Leicester. If anyone can squeeze a final productive spell out of him, it might be Rodgers again. Celtic fans will back him, as they do with every signing, but there’s no hiding the wider frustration: this move smacks of a short-term fix, a way to paper over cracks caused by the board’s lack of ambition and their failure to properly replace Kyogo and Idah.
If Iheanacho finds sharpness and confidence, he could prove to be an effective stop-gap and chip in with important goals. But in truth, his arrival is as much a reminder of what the board haven’t done as it is a statement of intent.
