Post-Match Reaction: Kilmarnock 1–2 Celtic

Celtic left Rugby Park with all three points to top the table on goal difference, but once again it felt like a case of getting out of jail rather than a convincing performance. The 2–1 win keeps the Bhoys top of the table, but it was another afternoon where the same old issues were on show.

The opener was a moment of real quality — a superb cross from Marcelo Saracchi met by a powerful Daizen Maeda header to give Celtic the lead. But instead of building on it, Celtic retreated into the same slow, predictable patterns of play we’ve seen all season.

Kilmarnock drew level through David Watson, who made a terrific run but was allowed to drift off Tounekti far too easily to nod home from a corner. It was poor defending and summed up Celtic’s lack of sharpness in key moments.

As the game wore on, frustration grew, with the attack once again lacking tempo and imagination. Tounekti did show flashes of promise — direct, positive, and always willing to take on his man — but too often Celtic were pedestrian in their build-up.

In the end, it took a stroke of fortune and the modern handball rules to hand Celtic a last-minute penalty. Harsh on Killie perhaps, but by the letter of the law it was the right call. Up stepped Kelechi Iheanacho, who kept his composure brilliantly to slot home under huge pressure and snatch a vital win.

Still, the manner of victory leaves plenty of concern. It was professional, yes, but hardly convincing. Celtic remain top of the table, but nobody can pretend this level of performance will be enough in the long run.

It’s going to be a long season, thanks to the board and their incompetence or negligence — whichever way you want to look at it — but we’ll always back our team. Hail Hail 🍀.
