Rangers 0-0 Celtic: Derby Stalemate Exposes Familiar Celtic Flaws

The first derby of the season ended goalless at Ibrox, but rather than being a hard-fought draw full of drama, it was a flat contest between two sides who looked short of ideas. For Celtic, the 0–0 result is less about what was gained and more about the worrying patterns that continue to emerge.
Slow, Predictable, Ineffective
Once again, Celtic’s build-up play was far too slow and predictable. Time and again, Rangers’ back four were allowed to settle into shape without being put under real pressure. The glaring weakness — balls in behind and high pressing — was there for all to see, but Celtic failed to exploit it.
When the Bhoys did go longer, pressing the Rangers defence and forcing mistakes, there were flickers of encouragement. Yet, frustratingly, the coaching setup seemed unwilling to commit to that approach for any sustained period.
Lack of Quality in Key Areas
The midfield was passive, lacking creativity and bite, and the attacking line offered little movement or threat. It was a performance that felt lethargic, almost disinterested at times, with no spark or urgency to tilt the game in Celtic’s favour.
This wasn’t about Rangers being strong — they were every bit as poor — but about Celtic once again failing to stamp their authority on a match they should have controlled.
The Bigger Picture
If anything, this derby underlined the consequences of a quiet transfer window. The lack of reinforcements in midfield and attack was laid bare, with too many players looking short of the required level. Against what is, by any measure, a sub-par Rangers side, Celtic failed to make any mark.
Conclusion
The 0–0 draw may not damage the league table much at this stage, but it leaves a sour taste. Once again, Celtic looked cautious, one-paced, and wasteful in possession. Until there is both a tactical shift towards aggression and genuine investment from the board, the fear is that these frustrations will become the story of the season.
