St Mirren 0–1 Celtic — McGregor’s Late Thunderbolt Saves the Day

Celtic left Paisley with all three points, but little else to write home about, after a turgid 1–0 win over St Mirren that did nothing to ease concerns over the team’s recent performances. For 90 minutes it was a grim, bitty match short on quality, tempo or invention — until Callum McGregor stepped up with a moment of brilliance to rescue a result that looked to be drifting away.
A Flat and Frustrating Display
For long spells, Celtic struggled badly to impose any sort of rhythm. The ball movement was slow, the final third lacked ideas, and the overall intensity simply wasn’t there. St Mirren sat compact and disciplined, and Celtic didn’t do nearly enough to stretch them or create clear openings.
Chances were limited to half-sights and hopeful efforts. It was one of those matches where every forward move felt laboured and every attacking phase broke down just when it looked promising. The hosts weren’t offering much the other way either, making it a thoroughly forgettable contest for neutrals — and increasingly nerve-shredding for the travelling support.
McGregor Delivers When It Matters
But games like this are often decided by a single moment, and thankfully Celtic had the one player on the pitch capable of producing it.
As the clock ticked towards stoppage time, McGregor collected the ball 25 yards out and unleashed a stunning strike, arrowing it into the top corner. It was pure quality — the kind of finish that lifts a team out of a rut and turns a poor performance into a vital win.
A Win, But Concerns Remain
Celtic will absolutely take the three points, especially in a period where every slip is punished. But the performance levels remain a concern. There was no fluency, no sustained pressure, and precious little cohesion. Too many players were off the pace, and the attacking patterns never got going.
Still, when the football fails, results matter — and McGregor’s late cracker ensured Celtic avoided another damaging stumble. A huge goal, a big win, and a reminder that even on the dreichest of days, moments of quality can still make the difference.
